Milá Janka, Alica a Jana. Dear Mrs Eisenstein + family, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of our dear professor. His courses & teaching have influenced so much both my life & my career and I fell blessed & thankful that I had the opportunity back in the late 80's to take all his graduate courses. The geotechnical and particularly the tunneling world has lost one of its pillars. Dan was both an amazing engineer & a fantastic teacher but also a wonderful human being and we, who met him initially through the U of A graduate classes as his students have now lost a great teacher, mentor and a friend. I am sure that the pain is so much more to you who have lost a great husband, father and a grandfather... May he rest in peace among the righteous and may his memory be eternal. Michael Mathioudakis, Ph.D., PE Albany, NY USA

My dear Jana I regret to hear that our sincere friend Dan had passed away. I guess you know the deep relation which prevailed between Dan & myself since 1983 - more than 25 years - when we met for the first time in Cairo organizing a tunneling course for our young Egyptian engineers. We - in the Egyptian Tunneling Society ETS will never forget his friendly co-operation remembering also that he was the president of ITA during the annual World Tunneling Congress WTC which was organized by ETS ITA in Cairo, April 1994. In the name of board, members of ETS & myself we all would like to express our deep cordial condolences to the family & yourself. May God Bless His Soul. Mohamed

We are truly saddened beyond belief that our very good friend, Dan, has passed away at such a young age! He always was a giant figure and the picture of health. We send you our sincerest and deepest sympathy. Dan was a great engineer, leader, teacher, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He enriched so many people’s lives both personally and professionally. He had so much more to contribute as a professional and as a family member and we all are saddened by his sudden loss. As you know, we had a special place in our heart for Dan through our work and professional activities especially as a fellow panel member and ITA President which leave us with many wonderful memories of Dan and his accomplishments. Dan was a true friend and colleague. It is very hard to realize that he is gone and we all will miss him tremendously. Although Dan's industry and professional friends will experience a great loss, it is you, the family, who suffer so much at times like this. Please be comforted in your time of sorrow. Jeho mentorovani, pratelstvi a ochota bylo neco, co me i me rodine umoznilo najit nasi vlastni zivotni cestu.

Dear Jana, Alice and Jana With great sorrow we received the news that your husband Zdenek Eisenstein passed away. On behalf of the Czech Tunneling Association ITA-AITES, of which he was an honorary member, we would like to express our deep condolences and sorrow over his passing. Zdenek was not only an expert of world renown, but also our dedicated and always helpful colleague and collaborator. We appreciate everything he has done towards the development of underground structures in the Czech Republic since 1990 – and this was no small thing. We are proud to say that many of us had the great fortune to count Zdenek as a good friend. His memory will always live in us

I was so shocked and saddened hear of Dan's sudden passing. We worked together on various projects at the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority Dan was among most favorite consultants. I enjoyed our rare conversations about a range of subjects and learned a great deal from him. His energy, optimism and passion for his work will be sorely missed. I extend my deepest sympathy to the family.

Dear Jana, I was just informed of the sad news of your fathers death .I am very sorry to hear this news. I last met your father in London recently when he gave a lecture about his work on the Vancouver Metro. It was a packed house mainly because Dan was speaking. I always enjoyed Dan`s company and he and l talked in Istanbul in 2005 about my candidacy for the Presidency of ITA.He encouraged me to go for it! He very kindly introduced me to the gathered delegates in Prague Castle on the evening that l was elected President in May 2007 .It was a memorable occasion and of course Dan was well known to many of the delegates in his capital city of Prague. He was a popular figure and was energetic and proactive. It is a tribute to Dan and other ITA Presidents like him that ITA flourishes. That is his legacy. My kind regards to your family and my thoughts are with you. Yours sincerely, Martin Knights ITA President

Dear Jana, Alice, Jana and families: Our hearts are full of sadness on the passing of your loving husband, father, and grandfather. Zdenek was truly an amazing man and will be greatly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. The Tunneling and Geotechnical Engineering world has lost one of the best in its field but even more importantly, the Eisenstein family has lost a wonderful family member who was kind and giving and so generous with his love for each of you. His presence was strong and will continue to be felt in the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues. May it comfort you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers and may all the special memories you have of Zdenek always keep him close to your hearts.
