A Little About Simon

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" Psalm 27

The youngest of four brothers, Simon was educated at Whitgift School and Oxford, where he studied Law. He joined the Foreign Office in 1980 and was privileged to serve as a British diplomat in China, Brussels, Switzerland and as British High Commissioner to Malaysia (until May 2014 when he was sadly forced to leave due to ill health).

After studying Mandarin, Simon was sent to China for a total of seven years over two decades. His posts included Consul General in Shanghai and Political Counsellor in Beijing during the Hong Kong handover. Closer to home he worked in the Cabinet Office and later served as Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein after a stint as Head of the European Union (External) department at a time of rapid EU expansion. Prior to taking up his post in Malaysia he worked as Project Director for the award-winning British Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo, for which he was awarded a CMG.

Simon married Gail, a teacher, in 1981 and they have three children- Sarah (married to Jon Reynolds), Jon and Lucy. Family life provided him with his deepest joys and helped to keep him humble!

Simon was passionate about the value of diplomacy. Highly intelligent, he particularly enjoyed the intellectual challenges inherent in the analysis and formulation of foreign policy, especially in the context of international negotiations. Simon's focus was always on substance rather than form, and he never took himself or his status too seriously. Those who heard Simon's version of the Parrot Joke (perhaps many times) can testify to this!

He loved travel, football and Sudoku; and latterly enjoyed a love-hate relationship with golf.

As a committed Christian, Simon saw public service as part of his Christian calling, treating everyone with equal respect, seeking to show integrity in all his dealings both professional and personal. As a result, he leaves friends all over the world from all walks of life. As a family we know better than anyone the extent of his steadfast Christian faith and personal courage, particularly in this last year of illness.

We were greatly touched by the excellent treatment and care Simon received at the Mount Edgecombe Hospice near St. Austell in Cornwall. This has been a cause close to Simon's heart; in his most recent posting in Malaysia, Simon and Gail were involved promoting the hospice movement through the work of Hospis Malaysia.
